Catfish (Magur, Singhi)

Clarias spp., Heteropneustes fossilis

Floating and sinking feed together

Magur and singhi feed on the pond floor and rarely take floating pellets, so use a sinking feed throughout. Floating feed in a catfish pond mostly goes to waste.

Good practice

  • Feed in the evening and at night, when catfish are most active.
  • Spread feed over the pond bottom instead of dropping it in one spot.
  • Keep the water about 0.75–1 m deep.
  • Move to lower-protein feed as the fish approach harvest size.
  • Grade the fish by size regularly; larger catfish eat smaller ones.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using floating feed for a bottom feeder.
  • Overfeeding, which fouls the bottom and the water.
  • Feeding in the heat of midday, when the fish are inactive.
  • Too little water exchange in densely stocked ponds.
  • Using pellets that break up before the fish find them.
