On the ground
How Nepal farms
Nepal’s aquaculture is concentrated in the Terai, which accounts for roughly 89% of the country’s pond area. Bara, Dhanusha, Saptari, Rupandehi, Siraha, Morang, Parsa, Rautahat, Sarlahi and Chitwan lead national production.
The dominant system is carp polyculture — common, silver, bighead and grass carp alongside rohu, naini and bhakur — which is close enough to the Indian Gangetic model that our existing formulations transfer directly, with adjustment for the colder Terai winter.
Feed is the constraint rather than the fish. Nepal already imports a large share of its extruded carp feed from Indian mills, and domestic production has not kept pace with pond expansion.
